What is Bioluminescent Bacteria

  • Vibrio fischeri, a non-pathogenic bacteria species that grows on various fish, squid, and other marine organisms.

  • It has been found in cans of tuna and squid at the fish markets.

  • It is easy to grow.

  • Requires no incubators or special sterilization equipment.

  •  Requires no microbiology experience or knowledge.

Growing Bioluminescent Bacteria

  • Bacteria grows on freshly prepared GB saltwater agar*.

  • Bacteria will cover Petri dish in 18 to 24 hours.

  • Bacteria will glow until all surface food source on Petri dish is exhausted.

*GB Saltwater Agar

  • Specially formulated agar for maximum bioluminescence of bacteria.

  • Bioluminescence can be seen in low light, more dramatic in total darkness.

NOTE:  DO NOT PUT BACTERIA IN AQUARIUMS WITH MARINE FISH OR OTHER MARINE ORGANISMS.  FOR DEMONSTRATION OF BIOLUMINESCENCE ON A PETRI DISH ONLY!
